Strawberry (Fragaria \u00d7 ananassa<\/em>) is a crop of economic and social importance in Costa Rica<\/strong>, especially in the highlands of the Central Valley.<\/p>

According to the 2014 National Agricultural Census<\/strong>, Costa Rica had approximately 232 hectares<\/strong> dedicated to strawberry cultivation, spread across 335 farms<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

    In the province of Heredia<\/strong>, particularly in the districts of Vara Blanca<\/strong> and San Jos\u00e9 de la Monta\u00f1a<\/strong>, it is estimated that over 26 hectares<\/strong> are dedicated to strawberry cultivation, representing approximately 22% of national production<\/strong>.<\/p>

    These activities not only diversify income sources<\/strong> for producers, but also strengthen the social and cultural fabric<\/strong> of the producing regions. Many of these areas are also engaged in rural tourism<\/strong>, making strawberry an agro-tourism product<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

    In 2023<\/strong>, Costa Rica exported $2.92 million USD<\/strong> in fresh strawberries, ranking as the 32nd global exporter<\/strong> of this product.<\/p>

    Although strawberry exports represent a smaller share<\/strong> compared to other agricultural products such as pineapple or banana<\/strong>, they are significantly valuable<\/strong> to local economies, especially in rural communities<\/strong> where strawberry cultivation is a key source of income.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

    • Imported plants<\/strong> are used (frequently from USA, Mexico or Spain<\/strong>), which may bring phytosanitary issues<\/strong> from those countries.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>

      Crop cycle<\/strong>: Annual, though some areas manage two cycles<\/strong> under appropriate conditions.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

      2. Climate change<\/strong>: Out-of-season rains and extreme temperatures affect flowering and fruit set<\/strong>.<\/p><\/li>

        The strawberry sector in Costa Rica faces challenges related to phytosanitary problems<\/strong>, such as the emergence of fungal diseases<\/strong>, and the effects of climate change<\/strong>. To address these, good agricultural practices<\/strong> have been implemented and the adoption of sustainable technologies<\/strong> is promoted to improve productivity and crop resilience.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

        Working with agronomist Eng. Henry Obando<\/strong>, among other strategies, the use of Glopper<\/strong> associated with Elysium<\/strong> has shown very promising results<\/strong> as a complementary tool, especially against Pestalotiopsis<\/em>. In this way, the combined use of these two organic solutions<\/strong>, particularly in strawberry cultivation, provides a great preventive solution<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
